PETER NEILL


Peter Neill is the founder and director of the World Ocean Observatory, created in 2004 as a web-based place of exchange for information and educational services about the health of the ocean. Peter is the former Director of the South Street Seaport Museum, New York (1984-2004); past president of the Council of American Maritime Museums and the International Congress of Maritime Museums; Research Associate at the University of Maine Climate Change Institute; Co-Founder of the Arctic Futures Institute; and frequent speaker at conferences around the world related to fresh water, ocean issues, fisheries, sustainability, policy, education, and maritime culture. He is the author of three novels; American Sea Writing - An Anthology (Library of America); several illustrated publications on maritime art; and two recent collections of essays:  The Once and Future Ocean – Notes Toward A New Hydraulic Society and Aqua/Terra – Reflections on the World Ocean (Leete’s Island Books). He lives in Sedgwick, Maine.
